Dogs know their strong sense of smell, but what is striking is the ability of a trained dog named Franky to recognize thyroid cancer with an accuracy of 88%. According to the British newspaper "Daily Mail", Frankie has an "amazing" sense of smell, as he can identify people with thyroid cancer, even before medical examinations to diagnose their disease.
Researchers from the University of Arkansas, USA, said that a test in 34 patients confirmed Frankie's ability to detect the tumor by 88%, as he had erred in diagnosing only two cases, and he was unable to diagnose two other cases.
Franky, a member of the German Shepherd family, was trained to lie on the ground as soon as the smell of gland cancer smelled in the patient's urine sample, and to stay away if the sample was free of disease.
Researchers are now seeking to see if Franky and other dogs can contribute to the diagnosis of several cancerous tumors, such as ovarian, breast, or prostate cancer due to their strong sense of smell, which exceeds the smell in humans 10 times.
Thyroid tumors are usually diagnosed by examining hormone levels in a patient’s blood sample, but they are often not accurate. Diagnosis of malignant tumors may require several surgical operations for the patient and analysis of samples from the tumors they have.
In this regard, the researcher at the University of Arkansas, Dr. Donald Bodner, explained that the diagnosis of tumors of the thyroid gland is very difficult because the tumors in this place of the neck, in particular, are hidden among several benign tumors.
Believe it or not, this dog diagnoses thyroid cancer
